10 new apple varieties worth trying

Apple breeding moves slowly. It can take 20 years or more to go from a single cross to apples in stores. These are some of the newest arrivals, starting with the most recent.

Most of them are club apples, grown under license, which is why some are easier to find in certain regions. Learn more in what is a club apple?

What new apples have in common

Look at the list and a pattern jumps out: crunch. Many new apples have Honeycrisp in their family tree, and breeders have worked hard to keep its crisp, juicy texture while adding better storage, more flavor or easier growing.

Long storage life is the other big goal. Several of these apples are at their best in winter and spring, months after harvest, when older varieties start to fade.
