SnapDragon® Apple
Origin & history
SnapDragon is the brand name for NY1, developed by Cornell University (Geneva, NY) and released to market in 2013 through Crunch Time Apple Growers. One parent is Honeycrisp; the other is a Cornell advanced selection from the NY‑75 series. Bred for big crunch, juiciness, and good keeping quality.
Appearance
Medium to large, round‑conic. Deep red to crimson finish with pale lenticels; smooth, glossy skin. Flesh is cream‑colored, fine‑grained, and very firm.
Flavor & texture
“Monster crunch” with very crisp, juicy flesh. Sweet to sweet‑tart profile with hints of vanilla/spice; flavor rounds further after a little storage while texture stays snappy.
Best uses
- Fresh eating and salads (standout crunch and juice)
- Snack boards (pairs well with cheddar, gouda, nuts)
- Light baking (crisps/galettes); for tarter pies, blend with Granny Smith or Pink Lady®
Season & availability
Northern Hemisphere harvest typically late September to early October in New York and similar climates. Regional availability through fall and winter; expanding distribution in U.S. supermarkets.
Storage & handling
A good keeper. Refrigerate at 32–36°F (0–2°C); maintains crunch for weeks to months. Choose heavy, firm fruit with clear red color; avoid bruises and prolonged warm storage.
Nutrition (per 100 g, with skin)
About 52 kcal; ~14 g carbohydrate; 2–3 g dietary fiber; small amounts of vitamin C and potassium—typical of dessert apples.
