Kanzi® Apple
Origin & history
Kanzi is the consumer brand for the apple cultivar Nicoter, bred in Belgium (Better3Fruit/Greenstar group) from a cross of Gala × Braeburn. Commercial plantings expanded across Europe and later to the U.S., Chile, South Africa, and New Zealand under managed licensing, making Kanzi a widely available premium (“club”) apple.
Appearance
Medium to large, round‑conic. Saturated red to crimson blush with lighter striping over a yellow‑cream ground. Flesh is cream‑colored, very firm and fine‑grained.
Flavor & texture
Very crisp and juicy with a balanced sweet‑tart profile—more tang than very sweet apples, with subtle spice and citrus notes. Texture stays snappy in the fridge; slices hold shape in cooking.
Best uses
- Fresh eating (bold crunch; bright flavor)
- Salads and boards (firm slices, attractive color)
- Baking: holds form in pies, crisps, galettes; blend with sweeter apples (e.g., Fuji) if you want more sweetness
- Cider: adds acidity and aroma in dessert‑apple blends
Season & availability
A mid‑ to late‑season harvest: typically October in Northern Hemisphere growing regions. Dual‑hemisphere production and good storability mean Kanzi is often available most of the year.
Storage & handling
Refrigerate at 32–36°F (0–2°C). Kanzi keeps quality for months in cold/controlled‑atmosphere storage. Choose heavy, firm fruit with vivid red coverage; avoid bruising and warm storage.
Nutrition (per 100 g, with skin)
About 52 kcal; ~14 g carbohydrate; 2–3 g fiber; small amounts of vitamin C and potassium—typical of dessert apples.
